Uneek Poetry

Keanna N. (Scott) Houston was born in Springfield, MA and grew up in Dale City, VA. Her curiosity and love of poetry began at the early age of 10 during her summer visits to Springfield, MA to visit her grandparents. It was during these summer visits she developed her unique style of writing. Her passion for writing continued throughout her school years from grade school to college. During her younger years she wrote 4 poetry books (unpublished) and published her first poem Always through the National Society of Poetry.

In 2001, while attending Alabama A&M University (AAMU) she became a member of the AAMU Poetry Club where she was affectionately given the name “Uneek” for her unique style of writing. During her time with the Poetry Club she began speaking at Open Mic Nights and held several offices within the Poetry Club. Her time with the Poetry Club was one of the most influential periods in her writing career and she was able to learn various writing and speaking techniques from several of her “PC” Family Members. At age 20 she graduated from Alabama A&M University with a B.S. in Business Management.

During her 3 ½ years at AAMU she began fine tuning her art and published other poems including Don’t, and Dedication to my Black Men. She also participated in AAMU’s Annual Black Poetry Day and other poetry events throughout Huntsville, AL including but not limited to poetry events at Oakwood College, Art & Soul Open Mic Nights, and more. When not working or writing poetry, Keanna enjoys spending time with her family, playing with her daughter, playing her guitar, crocheting, and cooking. Keanna currently lives with her husband Kevin and daughter Victoria in Woodbridge, Virginia.
